DIY or die

Some experiments by the crafter/DIYer in me. The design dream strangled inside me for so many years is now coming up in these cool little DIY projects. Hope you like 'em!

  • What an interesting idea! I might use the same technique and make a magazine holder.

The simple photo tutorial shows the use of a band saw, but with a little patience and a sharp pair of scissors you could cut each piece individually. And then have your scissors sharpened before storing them in your newly fashioned scissor holder.

  • DIY gift idea!

Well this is not exactly done by me, but hey, I still got the idea!

I was breaking my head over possible gifts to buy for a dear friend and then it struck me! She’s an elvis fan. Hmm…what could I gift her then….

What came out of that little internal brainstorming session was this!

I downloaded a hi res image of the ‘King of Rock’ off the net (Hey! this was my handiwork. It took almost half a day to find the absolutely gorgeous one.)

Took it on a pen drive, rushed to a printer (well, not exactly). Got it printed on 3mm acrylic board and got it framed.

Now that i’m going all the way with this whole DIY thing, i might as well make my own wrapping paper. Found some great ideas here

  • DIY Disaster: Batman etched whiskey glasses

Not everything turns out well when you get so lost in the idea that you actually forget the caveats in materializing it.

    Check this. :(

Got my hands on some etching cream that promised ‘easy’ etching that even a kid could do. Why the hell did they not tell how to do ‘it’ properly???

Anyway, I chose my stencil and decided to make some cool batman glasses.

Now, here’s the catch! I printed my design on ‘paper’ and completely forgot that the etching paste might seep through the sheet of paper on to the glass and mess up my project!

A word of advise friends. Make sure you’re using butter paper, wax paper or a plastic sheet for your stencil. Ya…you know, right?

  • How to: Magnetic post-it board

I was in a super DIY mood last night and my fingers were craving to get hold of scissors and glue and churn out something cute!

    So here it is!

I took a waste cardboard sheet lying around. Cut it up into a cute dialogue box shape.

Covered it with a nice red textured paper. The paper was cut in a size bigger than the cardboard and folded around the back.

If you see, i’ve cut slits on the edges of the paper. This glues the paper properly around a round surface and leaves no space for bubbles.

To secure the ends of the red paper, I covered the back of my speech bubble with a newspaper sheet. After that, took two decent sized magnets and stuck them at the back of the board.

Waited for a while and then voila!

There is so much potential to re-use each and every thing that you can find around your house. Not just from the point of view of conservation, it helps challenge your creative mind as well. Not to mention, the beautiful things that you might end up creating!

  • Turn a fish bowl into a terrarium

After my cute little danios died, I decided to tuck away my fish bowl for a while and just let it be.

The other day, while cleaning, it popped out from the storehouse and greeted me. And then this is what I used it as:

It’s not the best looking coz i’m not very skilled when it comes to taking good photos. But anyway, I’m gonna give you a quick photo tutorial this time. :)

After putting an inch thick layer of pebbles, start putting the soil. I got some special potting soil from the garden store which is great for planting saplings. I’m guessing you can use normal potting soil as well.

I also mixed a handful of organic fertilizer with the soil.

I planted them sufficiently deep into the soil to let their roots get firm and covered the surface with garden moss. Moss helps retain moisture at the top of the soil.

Added some sea shells and a tiny pine cone to embellish. Voila!

  • DIY quick wall decor with old CDs

When I recently moved in to my new rented house, I hated the walls. Bare, boring cream in color and patchy from the numerous times it’s been painted over. Hammering nails is not the best thing I can do and I only end up spoiling walls, much to the disappointment of my landlord.

    So I did this!

I found this amazing removable adhesive called ‘Tack-It’ at a local stationary store.

Then I just stuck some of it on to some old CDs I had and slapped them on to the wall in a pattern. The best part, I can remove and recreate it any time!

Neat or plain gross? Lemme know. :)

  • DIY Glass bottle makeover

After a party, apart from a nasty hangover, one of the things that stay with you is a big stack of empty bottles’.

Here’s a little idea to re-use those lovely looking glass bottles without having to find a way to stash them.:

    Materials Required

    - Any glass bottle/jar

    - All surface acrylic paints. Actually, just acrylic paints will also do.

    - Brush

    - water

    Step 1:

Rinse and clean your bottle with water or spirit. Put it to dry.

    Step 2:

Choose the base color you want to give the bottle. In my case, I used plain white paint from the new ‘All surface acrylic paints’ by ‘Hobby Ideas’. I love the entire hobby ideas range! Do check it out if you’re the DIY types.

    Step 3:

Dilute the paint with a little water. You don’t want dumb white lumps of paint to sit inside the bottle. The good part with the paints I used is that they can be thinned with water. That makes life a lot easier!

Also, make sure that you use just the right amount of water to dilute the paint. In my first attempt, I used a lot of water which completely gave the bottle a washed down look. So anyway, pour your diluted mix into the bottle.

Once you’ve got sufficient amount of paint in there, give the bottle a gentle roll so the liquid covers the entire surface from inside.

    And voila!

I was still not satisfied with a plain vanilla look so I experimented a little more with acrylic cerulean blue .

I wasn’t too happy with the end result but I’m sure a lot more can be done to enhance the look. You can also decide how you’re going to use it and then decorate it accordingly.

That’s it for this weekend guys. Love it or hate it, but do drop in your feedback. I’d really appreciate it. :)

  • You don’ mess with ze angry bird!

Ok, so my obsession for these little winged creatures has gone to another level. Although some people would argue that they’re more passionate about the game than I am, I bet they never thought of giving this a try.

The other day while cleaning up my closet I found this!

    From Diy

It says super-soft, colorful, air-dry, moulding material. Wow! I never knew these things existed. I just picked it up as a gift that I never gave away.

So now my mind was on a roll. What can I possibly do with this? Two minutes and two levels of angry birds later, I exactly knew what I was gonna do. So here it is, my labour of love… Ta-Da!!

    From Diy

    From Diy

What I loved about this project is that it took me less than half an hour to do this. The material is super mouldable, the different parts stuck beautifully to each other n they turned out super cute!

I can’t wait to try out the entire set of birds and maybe more of my favorite characters like the mario brothers and of course dexter!

Feel free to mail me for a tute (they’re not very difficult really) or just drop in a line here to tell me how you like ‘em. :)
